In indoor rooms a too elevated CO2 concentration causes headaches, fatigue and lapse of concentration. For the evaluation of the IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) the determination of the concentration of CO2 has been proved successful. The normal outdoor air in clean air areas indicates 360 ppm and approx. 500 ppm in urban areas. The limit value of 1000 ppm (« Pettenkofer number ») is still considered as adequate air quality. This is particularly important in all meeting and conference rooms, in schools but also in large space offices. The ruling Directive for class rooms in the United States is a maximum limit value of 1000 ppm; the MAK value (maximum concentration for workplaces) is 5000 ppm.
